Variations of Scale Height at F-Region Peak Based on Ionosonde Measurements during Solar Maximum over the Crest of Equatorial Ionization Anomaly Region
نویسنده
چکیده
Scale height is an important parameter in characterizing the shape of the ionosphere and its physical processes. In this study, we attempt to examine and discuss the variation of scale height, H m , around the F-layer peak height during high solar activity at the northern crest of the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) region. H m exhibits day-to-day variation and seasonal variation, with a greater average daily variation during daytime in summer. Furthermore, the diurnal variation of H m exhibits an abnormal peak at presunrise during all the seasons, particularly in winter. This increase is also observed in the F2-layer peak height for the same duration with an upward movement associated with thermospheric wind toward the equator; this upward movement increases the N2/O ratio and H m, but it causes a decrease in the F2-layer maximum critical frequency during the presunrise period.

[1] Measurements from the incoherent scatter radar (ISR) and ionosonde over Millstone Hill (42.6 N, 288.5 E) are analyzed to explore ionospheric temporal variations. The F2 layer peak density NmF2, peak height hmF2, and scale height H are derived from a Chapman a layer fitting to observed ISR electron density profiles. Diurnal, seasonal, and solar activity variations of the ionospheric characte...
متن کاملThe combined effects of electrojet strength and the geomagnetic activity (Kp-index) on the post sunset height rise of the F-layer and its role in the generation of ESF during high and low solar activity periods
Several investigations have been carried out to identify the factors that are responsible for the day-to-day variability in the occurrence of equatorial spread-F (ESF). But the precise forecasting of ESF on a day-to-day basis is still far from reality. The nonlinear development and the sustenance of ESF/plasma bubbles is decided by the background ionospheric conditions, such as the base height ...
متن کاملCharacteristics of the ionospheric total electron content of the equatorial ionization anomaly in the Asian-Australian region during 1996–2004
Ionospheric total electron content (TEC) of the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) is studied by analyzing dual-frequency signals of the Global Position System (GPS) acquired from a network of receivers around the AsianAustralian region during 1996–2004. The latitude, occurrence time, strength of the most developed EIA crest, and crest-to-trough ratio (CTR) for both the noon and post-sunset se...

With the recent increase in the satellite-based navigation applications, the ionospheric total electron content (TEC) and the L-band scintillation measurements have gained significant importance. In this paper we present the temporal and spatial variations in TEC derived from the simultaneous and continuous measurements made, for the first time, using the Indian GPS network of 18 receivers loca...
متن کاملEffect of equatorial ionization anomaly on the occurrence of spread-F
The unique geometry of the geomagnetic field lines over the equatorial ionosphere coupled with the E– W electric field causes the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) and equatorial spread-F (ESF). Ionosonde data obtained at a chain of four stations covering equator to anomaly crest region (0.3 to 33 °N dip) in the Indian sector are used to study the role of EIA and the associated processes on t...
